Are you looking for that fresh and clean feeling from the dentist to last a little longer? Here are a few tips for keeping optimal oral health between dental visits.
Excellent hygiene starts with the brush! Invest in an electric toothbrush.
Did you know that there are over 600 species of bacteria in your mouth? Give those little bacteria the warm and moist environment of the mouth and they can multiply! Manual tooth brushes can do the job, but why not add the power of a rotating head and vibrations of an electronic tooth brush. Multiple studies have shown electronic toothbrushes can remove more plaque.
Floss, Floss, Floss!
You’ve heard it before, but if you’re not a dedicated flosser, it’s time to become one. No matter how good your tooth brush is (electric or manual) it just can’t get in between the teeth. Tooth brushes do an excellent job of cleaning the tops and sides of teeth, but you need the right tool more to get in the small spaces between your teeth. Did you know that when you floss you should be running the floss along the side of each tooth, removing any build-up?
If you’re not a flosser and want to make this healthy habit a part of your daily routine, we recommend learning to floss without a mirror. If you have floss in your desk, in the bathroom, in your purse, you can floss when you think of it and not rely on doing it at the end of a long day. But you should be flossing at least once a day.
Still not quite fresh enough for you? Have you tried a tongue brush (also called a tongue scraper)?
We have clients that just love these little tools. They are exactly what they sound like, a little gadget that you scrape along your tongue to remove plaque and bacteria. A tooth brush can do the same thing, but a harder edge of a tongue scraper can be more effective.
Try Mouth Wash!
Mouth Wash can provide you many oral health benefits. Of course there is the fresh feeling it leaves in your mouth, when you don’t have time to brush, a quick rinse can leave your mouth feeling great. Mouth Wash can also kill bacteria and depending on the wash you select; they many have other benefits too – like fluoride treatment.
But you know the best way to get that fresh from the dentist feeling… of course, is to come to the dentist!
